In our previous article, <a href="https://contest.diproinduca.com/blog/let-s-build-a-better-world-free-of-violence?redirect_to=%2Fblog%3Flimit%3D9%26offset%3D0%23let-s-build-a-better-world-free-of-violence">"Let's Build a Better World."</a> We talked about the importance of maintaining peace around the world. We also talked about the importance of <a href="https://www.globalgoals.org/goals/16-peace-justice-and-strong-institutions/">UN sustainability goal 16</a>, which focuses on promoting peaceful and inclusive societies and access to justice for all, and the impact of war and conflict in communities around the world.&nbsp;But what happens when the issues are closer to home. Like at school, for example. Sometimes, the UN Sustainability goals can work together to form a whole new set of ideals. This article will discuss how goal 16, peace and justice for all, goal 3, good health and well-being, and goal 12, responsible consumption correlate.&nbsp;Are you ready? Let's see all of these in action.&nbsp;Have you been in a situation at school where conflict occurred? How did that make you feel? Did you take any actions either during the development of the conflict or later on? Is there anything you could have done differently?&nbsp;<a href="https://www.globalgoals.org/goals/12-responsible-consumption-and-production/">Goal 12</a>, Target 12.8 focuses on ensuring that people everywhere have the relevant information and awareness for sustainable development. Conflict can negatively impact people's sustainable development. For example, when you or someone close to you is a victim of violence or bullying, you can become sad, stressed, and anxious. When stressed and anxious, it becomes harder to focus on your work, school, and fun activities. As a result, your mind is elsewhere, you are worried, and your development (grades and relationships with others) suffers.&nbsp;This is why it is important to always talk to someone if you or someone you know is in a situation that requires intervention. Reaching out for help is never a sign of weakness. On the contrary, it shows maturity and emotional intelligence.&nbsp;Emotional intelligence (EI) is a set of skills that help us recognize, understand, and manage our own emotions. It also allows us to recognize, understand and influence the emotions of others. However, no one is born with emotional intelligence; this is a skill we can learn and develop throughout our lives.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h1>How to Improve Your Emotional Intelligence</h1><h2>Recognize your emotions and name them</h2>What emotions are you feeling right now? Can you name them? When in a stressful situation, what do you typically feel? How would you like to respond in these situations? Can you stop to pause and reconsider your response? Taking a moment to name your feelings and the way to react to the problem is an essential step toward a healthy emotional intelligence.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h2>Ask for feedback from others.&nbsp;</h2>Ask your teachers, friends, or family how they rate your emotional intelligence. For example, ask them how you respond to challenging situations, how adaptable or empathetic you are, and/or how well you handle conflict. It may not always be what you want to hear, but it will often be what you need to hear - take the feedback as a motivation to make improvements, not as a critique.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2>Read more books&nbsp;</h2>Studies show that reading literature with complex plots and characters can improve empathy. Reading stories from other people's perspectives helps us gain insight into their thoughts, motivations, and actions and may help enhance our social awareness.Now that you know what to do to improve and grow your emotional intelligence let's review what you do when you are in a conflict. Always remember to remain self-aware of your feelings and think before you act.&nbsp; &nbsp;<h1>Five Tips for Conflict Resolution&nbsp;</h1>Do you have any brothers or sisters? Because if you do, you sure understand conflict can happen any time. It is normal to sometimes disagree with someone. Whether it is about how they do things, what to watch on TV, or what to wear to a party, it is part of human interaction to have different opinions; however, how we react during a disagreement makes the difference.&nbsp;So next time you can feel the tension growing, try these five tips to dissipate the argument and responsibly engage in conflict resolution:<ul><li>Focus on the problem, not on the person. You're looking for a solution, not for a culprit.</li><li>Be kind, and explain to the other person your point of view.&nbsp;</li><li>Count to ten before you say something you might regret. Sometimes, we can say mean things we don't really mean in the heat of the moment.&nbsp;</li><li>Rather than impose a resolution, look to the participants to come up with one together.&nbsp;</li><li>If all fails, remove yourself from the situation. Kindly walk away and avoid further confrontation.</li></ul>Practicing these soft skills at home can help build better mechanisms to deal with conflict and stress when you grow up.&nbsp;

Think of a situation at home or school where you have been in disagreement with a friend, sibling, or parent. Now, what was the dispute about? Can you create a diagram with different solutions to the problem and how you can prevent conflict? Is there a way you can compromise? Next, discuss with your parents or friends and listen to their point of view. Remember, part of finding a resolution relies on listening and being empathetic. Add any ideas they may have, and together, find a solution.&nbsp;Remember:&nbsp;Be self-aware of your feelings. How are you feeling? Angry, frustrated? Did you know that violence can affect all forms of human development? Violence creates disruption and fear. A person who is a victim of violence lives in a constant flight or fight state of mind making it harder to focus on other things such as eating healthy and sleeping. Violence also harms the socioeconomic condition of society, making it harder for individuals to access education and health services. &nbsp;This is why the United Nations has recognized the importance of eradicating violence. According to the UN, Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals is dedicated to promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, the provision of access to justice for all, and building effective, accountable institutions at all levels.<h1>Glamorizing Violence in the Media</h1>The sad part is that the media, first in the cinemas and now in popular shows on Netflix, Hulu, and HBO, have played their role in romanticizing and normalizing violence. From a very early age, we are exposed to all forms of violence, to the point that we wrongly believe in the fantasy of street fights, gun-related violence, and even sexual violence. TV shows such as Euphoria, Vampire Diaries, Disney's Moon Knight, and The Mandalorian all have forms of violence.&nbsp;The media has also constructed a social image of what a victim of sexual violence should look like. Nearly all victims of sexual abuse in television and film are innocent wealthy or middle-class white female characters. This image of the "normal" victim of sexual assault created by the media makes victims of other races, genders, sexualities, and socioeconomic backgrounds appear less significant.&nbsp;Likewise, the media often creates stereotypes of the aggressors or villains that can damage the way we perceive groups of people different from our own.&nbsp;Anyone can be a victim of violence, no matter their ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.&nbsp;<h1>Violence in the Real World:&nbsp;</h1>a. Violence Against ChildrenNot all children are fortunate enough to live and grow in a loving and caring environment. Unfortunately, every day at least one child is a victim of physical punishment and/or psychological aggression, usually at the hands of a caregiver. Or, in some instances, children are being forced to work long hours, resulting in abuse and exploitation.&nbsp;These acts are not limited to developing countries. Even in places like the United States and Canada, some children are victims of violence and neglect. This is why governments, schools, and other institutions need to help and protect children's rights.&nbsp;What can you do to help if you or a friend are victims of violence?&nbsp;<ol><li>Tell someone. If you are the victim or are a witness to violence, tell someone.&nbsp;</li><li>Take all violence and abuse seriously. It is not a game, and it should never be part of a game to be physically or verbally abusive.&nbsp;</li><li>Take a stand. If you see violence, stand against it, but don't put yourself in danger.&nbsp;</li><li>Remember, putting others down doesn't raise you up.&nbsp;</li><li>Be a friend. You never know who can need your help.&nbsp;</li></ol>b. HomicidesA homicide happens when one person kills another. Reasons for homicides range from domestic disputes to interpersonal violence, to violent conflicts over land resources, intergang violence over turf or control, and predatory violence and killing by armed groups.&nbsp;Homicides happen at a global and regional level, and each country reports its homicide rates every year. Japan remains one of the countries with the lowest level of homicides in the world. This could be due to cultural learnings, government regulations, and views around violence. However, in Western countries, the media perpetuates homicides in film and TV as a false solution to world problems. We need to better understand as societies the positive outcomes that come with dialogue and resolution instead of violence. And we need to work together to reduce all forms of violence and related death rates across all countries by 2030.c. Conflict-Related DeathsConflict-related deaths are the number of deaths per 100,000 people from war, conflict, and terrorism-related victims. A war can be defined as an intense armed conflict between states, governments, societies, or paramilitary groups. Wars are characterized by extreme violence, aggression, destruction, and high mortality rates. War zones are terrible places to be and are often the epicenter of violence.&nbsp;In wars, there are no winners. Both children and adults, men and women, are victims of violence during war. Furthermore, wars tear families apart, hinder economic development, and impact the education of countless children.<h1>Wars Now - Ukraine&nbsp;</h1>On Thursday, 24th February, Russia invaded Ukraine. This conflict is still taking place today. Girls and boys and regular people just like you have fled their homes, schools, and jobs, searching for a safe place. In response, people from all over the world have come together to show humanitarian support for the people of Ukraine.&nbsp;According to the UN, the conflict has displaced over 7.1 million people inside the country so far. Find someone who can help and make a stand against violence.&nbsp;Talk with your friends and family about the types of violence and how we can help prevent violence in all areas. It all starts with education and better comprehension of your needs and the needs of those around you.

Equality has been at the core of all social debates for many years. In principle, it should be simple: we are all humans, and as such, we are equals, but in practice, societies have struggled with the concept of equality throughout time and history.&nbsp;Leaving no one behind and seeking equality and non-discrimination is at the heart of Sustainable Development. With that in mind, the UN Sustainable development goal 16 promotes peaceful and inclusive societies by providing access to justice for all and building effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels.&nbsp;<h1>Human Rights Day&nbsp;</h1>The United Nations General Assembly created the Universal Declaration of <a href="https://www.un.org/en/global-issues/human-rights">Human Rights</a> (UDHR) in 1948. With it, Human Rights Day came to be. Human Rights Day is observed every year on December 10th, the day the focuses on the importance of equality among humanity regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or any other status.&nbsp;This year's <a href="https://www.un.org/en/observances/human-rights-day">Human Rights Day</a> theme relates to 'Equality' and focuses on Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights Act – "All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights."&nbsp;Equality is aligned with the world's 2030 Sustainable Agenda. We need to work together to address and find solutions for deep-rooted forms of discrimination. We have come a long way, and we no longer support or condone discrimination against women and girls, indigenous peoples, people of African descent, LGBTI people, migrants, and people with disabilities. Equality, inclusion, and non-discrimination is the only way to reduce inequalities across nations.&nbsp;We must "rebuild better, fairer, greener."&nbsp;<h1>The Universal Declaration of Human Rights</h1>The Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been translated to over 500 languages, holding the Guinness World Record as the most translated document in the world! It proposes a series of articles covering each right, including:&nbsp;<h1>The right to equality&nbsp;</h1>All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights.<h1>The right to life</h1>This right means that no one has the right to kill another person. The right to life is often invoked in discussions surrounding war, police brutality, capital punishment, and self-defense.<h1>The right to freedom from torture and inhumane treatment</h1>This right means no one should be subject to "torture or cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment" under any circumstance. Also frequently invoked in discussions surrounding war, police brutality and capital punishment, and human experimentation with or without consent.&nbsp;<h1>Freedom from slavery and forced labor</h1>This right means no one should be held in slavery or servitude. The right relating to forced labor is absolute. However, some exceptions include work done as part of a prison or community sentence or work required in a state of emergency, like after a natural or man-made disaster. Also, work that is a civil duty, like jury service.&nbsp;<h1>The right to privacy</h1>This right covers protection from government surveillance. The UDHR describes this right as freedom from "arbitrary interference with privacy, family, home, or correspondence." The right to privacy frequently comes in discussions relating to technology, the power of intelligence agencies when dealing with terrorism, and, more recently, data collection from organizations like Facebook and Google.<h1>The right to marry and have family</h1>This right states that every one of "full age without any limitation due to race, nationality, or religion" has the right to get married and start a family. However, both people in the marriage must give their free and full consent. In addition, the right to marry is not an absolute right, which means that it's subject to national laws that make certain marriages (like a marriage between close relatives) illegal.<h1>The right to freedom of thought, religion, opinion, and expression&nbsp;</h1>Everyone has the right to form their own opinions, follow a religion of choice, and change their beliefs at any time. In many countries, "freedom of expression" or "freedom of speech" is considered the most important right. However, there are debates as to what counts as "protected speech".&nbsp;<h1>The right to work</h1>Everyone has the right to work, but they also have the right to have "favorable conditions" and protections against unemployment. People should also be entitled to equal pay for equal work. However, "Equal pay for equal work" remains a big issue often related to discrimination based on gender or race.<h1>The right to education</h1>All human rights are important. However, many consider the right to education a main priority because it leads to sustainable development. The UDHR says that education must be free through elementary school. Later, technical and professional education should be available and accessible to all. To this day, women and girls still face significant barriers to their education around the world.&nbsp;There are other rights in the UDHR focusing on other areas, such as the right to free elections, the right to a fair trial, and the right to no punishment without law, among others. Let's show the world.&nbsp;

The UN recorded at least 69,053 civilian deaths in 12 of the world's deadliest armed conflicts between 2018 and 2020. The UN goal 16, "Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions", focuses on finding ways to reduce all forms of violence and related death rates everywhere. But this is easier said than done.&nbsp;Violence and conflict often happen when people, countries or institutions can't find common ground on a topic. These differences in ideologies and tensions can run deep when coming to resolutions. As citizens of the world it is our responsibility to look for a peaceful solution. It is also the government's responsibility to provide equal justice to everyone. &nbsp;&nbsp;<h1>What Does Equal Justice to Everyone Mean?&nbsp;</h1>When regarding our social status, ideological background, age, gender or nationality, we are treated the same under the law. Where everyone will be held equally accountable, even members of the government or high-ranking military personnel, if and when the law is broken.&nbsp;Throughout history, this has not always been the case.&nbsp;A vital part of that struggle is in the judiciary system. The Judiciary is a system of courts whose job is to interpret and apply the law. The role of the courts is to decide cases by determining the relevant facts and the relevant law that applies in each case. However, bias, corruption, and media can sway a case one way or another.&nbsp;For a truly professional, independent, and impartial Judiciary, we need to reach a place governed not by politics, not by money, not by power — but by four simple words: equal justice under law.According to the UN, among the institutions most affected by corruption are the Judiciary and the police. Why do you think this is? Open the discussion with your family or peers and discuss with adults. Do you think you can find a solution to ensure equal justice under the law?&nbsp;&nbsp;<h1>Corruption and Bribery&nbsp;</h1>One of the UN targets for goal 16 is to substantially reduce corruption and bribery in all their forms. Corruption refers to any time a politician or high-ranking military personnel does something dishonest or illegal. Corruption can include giving or accepting bribes or inappropriate gifts, double-dealing, under-the-table transactions, manipulating elections, diverting funds, laundering money, and defrauding investors.&nbsp;Bribery is when someone offers something (such as money) to a person in return for some favor, which is often something immoral or illegal. Bribery is a form of corruption.&nbsp;Have you ever been offered something by a friend in return to keep quiet about something else? This is bribery, and we do not recommend you do or ask anyone to do this. According to the UN, one out of three students has been bullied by their peers at school in the last month. And at least 1 in 10 children have also experienced cyberbullying. Abolishing this kind of behavior in schools is at the core of building a sustainable and peaceful society. If we start making small changes early, we can change society's way and perceive the world.&nbsp;<h1>Human Rights&nbsp;</h1>Another thing to keep in mind when thinking about conflict resolution, peace and war is remembering the importance of human rights. Human rights are moral principles or norms for certain standards of human behavior. These norms are regularly protected by international law.Human rights include the right to life and liberty, freedom from slavery and torture, freedom of opinion and expression, the right to work and education, and many more designed to provide equal and fair treatment of humans around the world. Can you make a drawing, short video or animation to explain to younger kids why we should always aim for a peaceful resolution? Keeping in mind toddlers don't understand complicated words. Keep it simple but get your message across with empathy and with clear definitions. &nbsp;Lead by example; how would you show others what justice is? Think actions rather than just words. We believe that people like you, your peers, your friends and generations to come have the power to change the world.
